In this word of over-consumption and wastage, the world needs to adopt a more active recycling policy. There is no argument against the fact that the future will need recycling to effectively manage the depleting resource reserves. Various international organisations have adopted guidelines to ease the transition into such a system. Sadly it isn’t enough. Right now what we are doing is shifting responsibilities and key decisions to the future.
We are expecting things to pick up the pace and establish itself in the future than actively pushing for the change today. Changes do not come out of the blue. Especially a change of this magnitude requires a complete system overhaul and this can only happen properly if there are incremental changes strategically made in this direction. Yes, the future needs recycling. To get to that future we need to start now.
First and foremost challenge to this is pushing the idea of recycling as a mainstream thought. Ultimately it the people who have to adapt to changes and make recycling a part of their everyday life. It would be foolish to think that people will change themselves by reading a well-researched report on this. Governments should start building a network that is conducive for such a shift to happen with well laid out plan of action. Supporting the right investments and collecting public support for projects with ecological value is something can the governments can start doing now.
The new innovations in waste management sector made by companies such as Solwearth show how existing problems can be solved without having to hurt the environment. The government could easily promote such ventures and make policy changes that get more people to start using these products. This might not seem like a big thing right now, but gentle steps like this can save us a lot of trouble in the future. Reiterating the title let me conclude by saying that to make a recycle friendly society in the future, the foundation for it must be constructed today.
